茶の湯 in San Francisco

蒟醤（きんま）とは、器面にまず文様を線彫りし、その中に色漆を充填（じゅうてん）して、それが乾いたのちに研ぎ出す技法をです。 タイ、ミャンマーに伝わる漆工芸技法です。日本には16～17世紀頃にアユタヤ王国との交易を通じてもたらされました。今でも茶道具として珍重されています。

Kinma is a traditional lacquer technique seen in Thailand and Myanmar.  Intricate lines are carved into the surface.  Colored lacquer is then applied to the carved lines.  When the surface is dry, it is polished.  It was brought to Japan in the 16th or 17th century through trades with Ayutthaya　Kingdom (today’s Thailand).  Kinma is cherished as tea utensils even today.
