Whether using the line slit or the hole slit method, it is said that the transplanted grafts stabilize within about three days. Transplanted grafts enter a dormant phase, during which about 80-90% of the hair from the graft sheds within one to four weeks. Subsequently, they enter a growth phase, and gradually, fine hair starts to grow, eventually developing into normal, robust hair within six months to a year. According to large-scale international surveys on graft survival rates, approximately 90% is a commonly observed high percentage. The primary reason for the high graft survival rate is attributed to the donor dominance theory, wherein the properties of hair follicles less prone to male pattern baldness are inherited.

Another reason is the remarkably high vitality of the hair follicles themselves. In autologous hair transplantation, not only the hair follicles but also the surrounding tissues are transplanted. However, for hair follicles to nurture hair growth, blood flow is essential, and communication with nerves regulating blood flow is also required. It's similar to moving an old house to a new location; without connecting essential utilities such as electricity, gas, and water, one cannot settle there. Transplanted hair follicles are similar in this regard. However, in autologous transplantation, grafts are merely implanted. Yet, blood vessels and nerves manage to establish connections and allow settlement to occur smoothly. Why does this happen? While many aspects of this mechanism remain unclear, I believe the following explanation sheds some light: Even when injured, minor wounds heal naturally without requiring treatment. Various cells gather at the injured site to heal the wound, and blood vessels and nerves start to pass through. This tissue formed for healing is called granulation tissue. Whether it's a hole slit or a line slit, the skin sustains small wounds. Likely, small granulation tissues form, initiating the natural healing process. When hair follicles, possessing robust vitality and capable of proliferating cells, arrive, their interaction with the granulation tissue likely facilitates the establishment of blood vessels and nerves' connection, enabling hair follicles to function correctly at the transplant site.

In fields like plastic surgery, treatment methods leveraging the exceptional vitality of hair follicles are also employed. Transplanting hair follicles onto burnt areas accelerates the healing process. Wild animals constantly sustain injuries from fighting predators or hunting prey. They don't go to hospitals or apply ointments to their wounds. Nevertheless, many of them heal naturally. I secretly speculate that their resilient natural healing abilities are supported, in part, by the hair (hair follicles) covering their entire bodies.
