Chapter 3: The Appearance of Haman
1. Haman and Mordecai
A man named Haman appears on the scene. He was a man who was highly esteemed by the king and had suddenly emerged as a figurehead. Haman was "the son of Hammedatha the Agagite. We are reminded of the incident described in 1 Samuel 15, where Saul did not sanctify Agag. Although we do not know whether the author intended to write such a background note, the historian Josephus speaks of Haman as a descendant of Agag, king of the Amalekites. In other words, Saul saved the life of Agag, the leader of the Amalekites, and was rebuked by Samuel, leading to this eventuality. However, it may be reading too much into the threat of the Amalekites, the enemies of the Jews. In fact, in the Greek translation of the Seventy, the Agagites are translated as "braggarts," and there does not seem to be any such contrast.
At any rate, the king's retainers were ordered to bow down on their knees to the promoted Haman. But Mordecai, being an honest and forthright man, refused to do so, even if it was a social command. He is warned, "Why do you defy the king's command?" And as Haman learns of this fact, he too finds Mordecai's stubborn attitude unacceptable, and he finally decides to punish and eradicate not only Mordecai, but his people as well. Thus, a lot was cast to determine the day. Lottery is a method commonly used in the ancient East. The Israelites also sometimes used that means (Proverbs 16:33). However, Haman also used lots, but he was not a monolithic superstitious person. Rather, he was a strategist who took the time to try to convince the king of his plan in order to carry it out. He was also a wealthy man who could temporarily invest 10,000 talents of silver, which is 345 tons of silver, for his own plans. Perhaps Mordecai did not approve of him because he was a man who had acquired power through his shrewdness and money.
2. providential guidance from God
At any rate, Haman's ploy was to give the Jews a year's grace to reverse the situation. The king would give them the ring, which would testify to the steadfast king's decision, and leave them to Haman's will. Thus Haman made his personal grudge the organized policy of the state. "Root them out, kill them, destroy them, and take their possessions," a truly terrible command.
Verse 12, the 13th day of the first month, is the day before the Passover lamb. It is a day that no Jew can forget. It reminds us of God's saving work in the Exodus. But the Lord does not dare to stop Haman's actions. The author contrasts the chaos in the city of Shushan with the time of the feast between the king and Haman, as if to say that the wicked will prosper more and more, although God's righteous judgment awaits ahead. Or perhaps it can be read as an indication of God's patience as he awaits Haman's repentance. Either way, we are taught again today that trust in God is all that matters to us, regardless of whether the situation is good or bad. So, I pray that you have a good day today.
