VXDIAG, TECH2 and MDI Clone Which is Better?

 Since this come up on which device to buy, thought that I would do a quick write up of the three.

Starting with the Tech II clone, it just that and will do what the real Tech II will do. Hence diagnostics through the tool, and be be used for programming with either TIS2000 or AC Delco TDS with the tool set in pass through mode.
The downside of the clone tools is the knock off DC to DC converter, which tends to burn itself out in a short time. You can replace the converter board on the tool, and the converter itself is not that expensive.

Next on the list is the MDI clone (blue box, and looks like the GM MDI).
The MDI clone is a copy of the GM MDI 1, not the MDI 2 that’s transfers data at a much faster rate. On the MDI 1 clones, they all have the serial number, and again, work just like the GM MDI. The downside to the clone MDI, is that it really wants you to have a working account, since it does not have legacy drivers to step it back to work with say most of the cracked software like the Nano. So when using the MDI clone, you will be using real GM Software from the most part/limitations of the GM software without a working account.
 
As for the MDI clones, they run Tech2win software to make them work just like a Tech II tool, but since they are MDI clone, they can run GDS2 software for the newer models like the C7 as well. So the both the MDI clone (blue unit) and GM Nano will come with Tech2win program, as well as a VM GDS2 program, which neither of these programs connect to GM, so you don’t need a subscription to run these two programs.

 

Now on the VXDIAG VCX NANO for GM. Although its really just a mdi clone to start with, it does have the legacy type drives that allows it to run the cracked software that you would use with a Tech 2. Hence the device will come with a cracked version of Tech2win that adds the needed tweaks To GM MDI that will allow you to use it with the cracked Tech2 , cracked VM TIS2000 that you will build a pass through driver, and then also works for VM GDS2, and AC Delco TDS (using it’s own VX drivers, and not the Bosch MDI/Tech II drivers that TDS will be offered that you do not want to install with the Nano device.

The clone MDI in a nicer unit than the nano since it has a better cabling system, but it about $100 more than a GM Nano, which is just a clone MDI as well.

The Tech II clone is not bad, and I use it some times when I have limited space in the car for fast work, The downside right away, it does not work with the newer GDS2 software, so limits it use for cars older than 2013. Also, keep in mind that the DC to DC converter is going to go south at some point, so plan on buying the better converter chip and replacing it at some point.

The VX GM Nano on the other hand, is much cheaper than a Tech2 clone. You do have to use the software for it on a laptop, but that’s not a bad thing for us older guys that wear cheater glasses to begin with. Now the real pro here, it works with Tech2win, Tis2000, GDS2 and acdelco TDS for all the vehicles up to the current year. Plus, when you are running VM GDS2 with the shell having internet access for DTC’s, will bring up a internet page of better descriptions of the problem to help you trouble shoot the problem even faster.

Take it one step farther, the Vxdiag vcx pro three in one device is a very good unit since the price include any three of the software packages to start with. So if you have a GM, the wife has a Ford, and the kid has a Toyota,   the price is not too bad at add them at at later date and comes with the needed software as well.

 
 

The Nano running Tech2win and the Tech II can work withing the firmware settings, but not modify the firmware itself in a fashion that is against the firmware functions.
With the use of either TIS2000, or TDS, you can reflash the stock firmware back in, but that is about it.

Hence lets say that we are trying to turn off the TPMS system, and it not something that can be done with either a nano running tech2win or a tech II. To pull this one off, we would need to mod the firmware file itself, then flash that in with Tis2000.
Will note, when you are firmware flashing with Tis2000 or TDS, you have one of two options. In normal mode, your given a list of firmware file for that vin number that you can select the needed one.
In cases like the upgrade F55 option file that GM sells for the C7, instead of that file being in the normal list, you select the special file option, and will input the special file number that was written for your vin to flash it in instead.
As for the special firmware file you modded to say shut the TPMS system off, it a little more completed since we need to tie that file into your vin in TIS2000 so it will show up in the list to flash instead.

Simply, it not going to allow you modify the firmware in a fashion that HP tuner or EFI live will in regards to the ECM engine tuning.

VXDIAG VCX SE BMW No Device Problem Solution

Problem:

I got the vxdiag vcx se for BMW with HDD. When i connect the vcx se with laptop and vehicle, the power, wifi indicators turn on, computer icon light turns on and flashes, then goes out. Vehicle indicator turns on.

VX Manager did not detect the vcx se bmw, saied no device connected.

I tried to run ISTA+ software, it showed nothing but blank. Any idea?

Solution:

If VX Manager does not detect device and show information, you can not run any vxdiag software.

Download and install VX Manager driver again.

How to set up VXDIAG GM on Windows 10 Pro USB 2.0?

 Here’s the VXDIAG VCX NANO GM GDS2/Tech2Win working experience on Surface Pro (Windows 10) tablet:

 

“I tried on three of my Surface Pro 2017 models (Windows 10 Pro) Everything would work except the Tech 2 software. CANDI not connected. Not matter what I tried. When launching Tech2 the popup to choose connection to the MDI wasn’t appearing. I looked everywhere for the usb drivers with no luck.

After messing around a couple days with it, I got it to work with another laptop running Windows 10 Pro.

I think the problem is that the Surface Pro runs a usb 3.0 port and the other laptop has a 2.0 port. So if you only have a 3.0 port you may run into issues. A possible workaround would be a usb port splitter that supports usb 2.0. I haven’t tried this because I didn’t have one on hand.

The winning combination for me was:
1. USB 2.0 port on pc
2. Windows 10 Pro
3. Latest version of VX Manager from vxdiagshop I think it was 1.6xxx
4. Latest downloads for the GD2 folder & tech 2 folder from vxdiagshop.com
5. Didn’t use anything from the CD in the box
6. When installing Vx Manager I did tick the boxes for pass-through and GDS2 / Tech2Win and SPS.
7. Installed all three software programs
8. Plug in the module to the pc (doesn’t need to be connected to car)
9. Run VX Manager and the module should show up. Update firmware on module itself.
10. Hit the automotive tab on the left and verify pass-through and GD2/Tech2 (and SPS if you need it) have green checks on them. If not double click to open them and install / update if necessary.
11. Leave the VX Manager running – minimize it if you want to.
12. Double click shortcut on desktop to launch Tech2Win
13. Choose North America
14. Choose MDI interface – not MDI2
15. Next dialog box pick the only choice there is to choose from.
16. Tech2 should run fine. Splash screen on startup will show CANDI unit connected.

How to Update VXDIAG Volvo Firmware to 1.6.6.0?

Problem:

My vxdiag vcx nano volvo interface has got quite old version firmware 1.5.1.0 as i see the latest goes to 1.6.6.0.  I tried to update the firmware but it failed me and reported an error “Firmware update failed”. Device was connected and communication indicators turn on.  Any idea?

Firmware version is too old to directly update to latest version.

First download firmware file 1.5.2.exe and install.

VXDIAG Ford cannot run IDS from patch solution

Problem: 
I downloaded VXDIAG VCX NANO Ford IDS and patch files then tried to open patch and this comes up
"Error Failure, try again: 3"

I just received my new Porsche piwis iii tester and I would share my thoughts since I have used Durametric cable clone, piwis ii and the 3 now.

Why I bought the piwis iii?
 
Durametric cannot do the coding I need. it has very very limited coding abilities, a PIWIS can could absolutely anything.
Since the PIWIS 2 is obsolete I don’t know if Porsche is supplying updates for it. The only issue I see is that the newest variants of certain modules will not be able to be programmed.  All of the 2’s I see have the last software that was issued a few years back so there may not be updates for it. If you buy used modules with the same version as the one you remove then this isn’t an issue. Since module replacement is an unusual thing unless you buy a flood car like me I don’t see this as an issue.
The piwis 3 is faster but the tablet one might be equally fast. My particular 2 never worked well for guided fault finding and my three is better but refers to documents that only dealers have.  It supports all the older models that PIWIS 2 supported as well. PIWIS 2 is limited to
 
 
How does the piwis tester iii works?

I should be more precise as I did not purchase an actual PIWIS III. It is actual a factory tool and currently sells for $5,900 which was way too rich for my blood. It is in the factory carrying case with all the cables and WLAN cap for the VCI that plugs into the usb mini port and allows for wireless connection to the car, along with the multimeter and oscilloscope cable.  What I bought, which sells for around $2,000 and what is for sale in most places, is a Lenovo laptop with Windows 8.1 installed and the Porsche PIWIS IIIsoftware (Current version is 38.9) installed and includes a USB wired VCI the same one the factory tester uses.  I both cases the VCI and software have been modified to disable factory authentication and naturally there is no automatic updates. If you did have a PPN account, this tool would update normally. Most offer one year of updates and then charge for subsequent years. It should be known that the updates are really for adding new model years, not software changes. On to the review.

It is a nice laptop with a touch screen and a screen pen included. The Porsche software starts automatically, but the Microsoft button functions and you can do other things at the same time such as TeamViewer or open an internet page. The VCI ( the part that connects to the diagnostic port) is smaller and the cable connecting is shorter, but it is a standard USB to miniUSB cable so you can purchase an longer one anywhere.
The tester can be changed from after sales mode to developer mode which allows for a lot of special features ( looking at you who want to disable start stop permanently). The software is faster, and easier to use than the previous version. For example on the diagnostic program, the tester auto detects the car model. Just plug it in, turn the key on and it does its thing. For me, I'm not sure if it is a function of the unit I have or not but the guided fault finding works well. Click on any fault and press the fault finding button and the unit tries to provide you a diagnostic plan. The plan is better and the English description is better. I haven't tried the wiring diagram software but I imagine it works as well as the previous version.
There is a new ODBC program on the unit that reads standard ODBC codes, I am wondering if this unit can be used for other cars for simple code reading. I will try it on a buddy's car next week and let you know. There is a oscilloscope function and a multimeter function but the laptop clones don't come with these cables.
The PT3G interface runs on my 996 Turbo and I've used it to PPI 2018 Panamera Cayenne and a 2019 911 with no problems.
All in all it is a better tool but really can't do more than the 2 can do, only faster and on cars from model year 2018 to current which the 2 can't do.

DTS Monaco Benz HU05 Flashing Programming

Open DTS Monaco - VXDIAG, click on "Diagnostic Services" and it has no HU5 Ethernet option and can't program DOIP, click on "File" and then "Close" to exist DTS to import the data.

Click on "Administrate and manage DTS projects".
Enter "System Configurator" - > "System settings" -> "Interfaces", check if the options are correct as below.

Diagnose Mazda CX-7 with VXDIAG VCX NANO

There is vxdiag vcx nano Ford/Mazda 2-in-1 device whichw bought on Chinese 6.18 promotion.  Naturally, this is a Chinese clone of the expensive VCM IDS dealer device.
According to the description- the device fully works with IDS software, and can also be friendly with any software that supports the J2534 PassThru standard.
I decided to diagnose and program module by myself. BTW, I am driving a Mazda CX-7 Turbo-fashion.

Installed the latest version of VX Manager from allscanner.  Connect vcx nano interface to the laptop with the USB cable.

VXDIAG VCX NANO GM ans SPS update 2011 Volt ecu software

With SPS you can update the ecu software ( gm calls it calibration). Other tweaks can be done with gds2 offline.

 

I just did SPS programming with my 2011 Volt and here are the notes I made to myself so I could remember what I did.  Hope it helps.

 

Preparation: 

-Download newer version of software on vxdiagshop.com website, not the older version provided on the CD.

-Both the downloaded and the CD version of the file GDS2AutoInstall\GDS2Install\GDS2.exe are reported to have a virus by both Windows 10 Defender (on the Win10 laptop) and Comodo (on the eePC laptop). One needs to turn off all virus protection to get the GDS2 package to install.

I have not been able to get the Tech2Win software to work on Windows 10.  The Tech2Win installer and the GDS2 installer seem to use different versions of the GM MDI package, so the order of install may matter quite a bit. But i have managed to get it working on Windows 7 32bit.

Note:The Volt has TWO OBDII connectors, one on the driver’s side and one on the passenger side. I could only get the driver’s side to work with the ACDelco SPS module upgrade software.
Generally want the car in Service Mode when messing with this stuff. Without touching the brake pedal, push the start button for 5-10 seconds.

 

What worked on the Window 10 x64 PC and Windows 7 x32 PC:
TO INSTALL VxDIAG provided software:
– Turn off virus protection (e.g. Windows Defender)
– Install VMWare-player. Use 15.5.1 on a Windows 10 x64, and 6.0.6 on 32 bit Windows 7 machines. I think 6.0.6 is the last VMWare-player to include 32bit OS support.
– Install the downloaded version of the VX Manager. This code seems to manage the interface to the VXDiag VCX Nano for GM dongle.
– Install the downloaded version of the GDS2 package using the autoinstaller (click on GDS2AutoInstall.exe)
– Now need to run VxManager with dongle attached. Go to the Diagnostic tab, and install the three drivers there (PASSTHRU, GM GDS2/T2W, SGM RDS).  I always installed all three. Don’t think GDS2 will work without at least the GDS2/T2W driver.

 

TO USE:
– Start VxManager. This always has to be running first. Make sure it connects with with the dongle. Seems like the config can be set to AUTO and it still works. On Win7 it needed to be set to USB though.
– Start GDS2.exe.
– Click on the Diagnostics block in the upper left
– Select MDI2 Device (must be this device!)
– Could only get GDS2 to work on the driver’s side OBDII port. The passenger side OBDII won’t communicate.

INTERPRETING BATTERY CAPACITY: 2011 Volt shipped with 16 kWh battery (when new).
Battery Capacity is represented as a hex number, HH. It is readable at
Module Diagnostics\Hybrid Power Control Module 2\some reset grouping somewhere

To convert to kilo-watt-hours (kWh):
Convert HH to Decimal, DD.
DD/10 = AA Amp-hours
AA * 358 Volts / 1000 = battery capacity in kWh

For example, on 1/17/2020, with about 85000 miles on the car, we read a hex value of 0x179 = HH.
DD = 377, so 37.7 Amp-hours
37.7 Ah * 358 V /1000 = 13.5 kWh battery capacity.
13.5/16 = 84.3% of original capacity.

 

 

ACDelco Module upgrade software (https://www.acdelcotds.com/subscriptions)
This whole package seems to be a Java application, so will need Java installed.
TO INSTALL: (only tried this on Windows 10 x64)
– Click on the “View” button for our subscription to Vehicle Programming Software (bought the $40 one VIN only option)
– Click on the VIN
– Some informational screens may be displayed, need to scroll down to the bottom to click on OK buttons. One of these will be about installing new J2534 wrapper software.
– Click on SPS (Service Programming System) icon
– Click on “start SPS” button. This will download a java applet that will control the rest of the install process.
– At some point it will ask to install three new packages. Do NOT install a newer version of the GM MDI package (pick DO NOT INSTALL). Seems like we need to use the VXDiag supplied MDI to work with the dongle. The other two packages seem to have to do with the J2534 wrapper. I tried “version 6” for the bottom package, not version 7. It might work with version 7.

 

TO USE:
– Put the car in Service Mode. Without touching the brake pedal, push the start button for 5-10 seconds.
– Start VXManager software, make sure it connects to dongle.
– Select VXDiag GM interface in the SPS software java app.
– Could only get this all to work with the driver’s side OBDII connector. When installed on the passenger side OBDII connector, it complains with some “Detected Off-board programming!” error or something like that. So I couldn’t update modules only accessible from the passenger side OBDII.
– When I reprogram the brake module, it threw a hard service code and disabled brake assist (BE CAREFUL DRIVING THE CAR WITHOUT BRAKE ASSIST AS IT TAKES MUCH MORE PEDAL EFFORT TO APPLY THE BRAKES). I then needed to run GDS2 and do the learn procedures for that module. This cleared the code and got the brake assist working again.
