今日解説するこの有名な名曲と、昨日たまたま、同タイトルの曲で昔書いた記事を再度UPした直後だったので、「また知らされたな」と思ってしまった。良くこの手のことが起きるので慣れてはいるが、この数週間で３度もあったので音楽の神様が私に教えてくれているような気持ちに又なっている。
以前Eddie Money の記事などでブログに書いたが、Ronnie Specterは、美人で歌唱力抜群&魅力的な女性で多くのファン&ミュージシャンから愛された人だ。
Keith Richardsと両思いでラブラブだったのに、Ronnieを取られたくないPhil Spectorが2人の仲を邪魔して別れさせたのは、有名な話。そして結婚しちゃうんだから、大ヒットを作り出す名プロデューサーで色々なアーティストに支配力を持つ男でも、こんな恋のバトルをしちゃうのだ、と驚いたのを覚えている。

“Be My Baby” is a song by American girl group the Ronettes that was released as a single in August 1963 and later appeared as a track on their 1964 album Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes featuring Veronica. The song was written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, and Phil Spector. Spector also produced the Ronettes’ recording in what is now considered a quintessential example of his Wall of Sound production formula. It was recorded with a host of session musicians later known as the Wrecking Crew. Ronnie Spector is the only Ronette that appears on the track.

この恋する乙女の気持ちをHotに歌った【Be My Baby】は、The Ronettes の最大のヒット曲で、ビルボードホット100チャートで2位に上り詰めた。
本当に耳に残る素晴らしいメロディ。つい鼻歌を歌ってしまうだろう。Lyraは鼻歌からノリノリになってしまう為、マジ歌になり、気づいたらいつもダンス付きで歌っている。
この曲は、NME（2位）、Time、Pitchfork（6位）によっても1960年代の最高の曲の1つと見なされている。
1999年に、グラミーの殿堂入りをし、ローリングストーンの2004年版と2020年版の両方で史上最高の500曲の22位にランクされ、「ロゼッタ」と呼ばれている。

Ronnie Spector として世界的に知られているVeronica Yvette Greenfield (Bennett; ベロニカ・イヴェット・グリーンフィールド(旧姓ベネット; 1943年8月10日– 2022年1月12日）は、ニューヨーク州ニューヨークマンハッタン、ワシントンハイツに生まれた。
アフリカ系アメリカ人のチェロキー族の母親と、アイルランド系アメリカ人の父親の娘として生まれ、彼女と妹のEstelle Bennettエステル・ベネット（1941–2009）、いとこのNedra T ally ネドラ・タリー（1946年生まれ）は、大家族から歌うように勧められていたと言う。
そしてトリオを結成。このトリオは、後にロネッツとして知られる事になる、ダーリンシスターズと言うヴォーカルグループとして活動を始めた。当時は、ワシントンハイツのジョージワシントン高校に通いながら地元で演奏した。
The Ronnetsが活動していたのは、1960年代初頭のニューヨーク大都市圏周辺で、人気のライブアトラクションのグループになった。 この人気から自信を得た彼女らは、レコーディング契約を探し出し、当初、Colpix Recordsと契約し、StuPhillipsが作品を制作した。
このコルピックスでいくつかのシングルをリリースしたのだが、成功せず、彼らは、Ronnhieが率先して活動し、レコードプロデューサーで有名なPhil Spector フィルスペクターに会って、フィルスペクターは気に入り、1963年に彼のレーベルPhillesRecordsに契約のサインをした。

1990年、彼女は回想録『Be My Baby：How I Survived Mascara、Miniskirts、and Madness、Or、My Life as aFabulousRonette』を出版。
2007年The Ronetts のメンバーとしてロックの殿堂入りも果たした。
Ronnieは、1965年に「BorntoBeTogether」と「IsThisWhat I Get for Loving You？」で、2つのトップ100ヒットを記録し、1965年ビートルズとローリングストーンズに次ぐイギリスで3番目にトップの歌唱グループに選ばれたのだから、凄いと思う。才能も有るのだから評価されて当然だが、女性アーティストでありながら、差別が多い当時でやってのけたのは、快挙だ。
マンハッタンのスパニッシュ・ハーレム地区生まれで、根性と才能でチャンスを掴だのも夢みたいなことだし、1963年デビューした途端ビッグビっトしてしまうのだから！
勿論、Phil Specterによる手腕もあるが、Ronnieの可愛らしさと、ちょっぴり小悪魔的なキャラクター、そして、この魅力的な歌声のお陰で一躍スターダムにのし上がったのだ。
絶好調な中、1966年には解散してしまうのは勿体無い。それに、Ronnie は1968年にはPhil Spector と結婚したあと1974年離婚してしまうならば、他の本当に好きになった人と結ばれればよかったのに、と思ってしまう。
後にグループは復活。Ronnieは、The Ronettesのリード歌手として歌う一方で、ソロとしてもアルバムを発表し活動を続けて、ロックの殿堂入りも果たした。色々ありながらも、ずっとロックンロールし続けたのだ。
【Be My Baby】について
最も人気のある曲
The Beach Boysの Brian Wilson が 【Be My Baby】を史上最高のポップ・レコードと宣言している。それほどこの曲は、The Ronettesの最も有名な曲であり、60年代を代表する曲なのだ。1960年代、最も人気がある曲ともいわれている為、多くの歌手がカヴァーして来た。
2006年、議会図書館は、このオリジナルである The Ronettes の【Be My Baby】の歌うヴァージョンを米国国立録音レジストリに追加することし、表彰した。 2017年には、ビルボードが「100 Greatest GirlGroupSongs」のリストで曲番号1に、この曲を選んだのも偉業の一つだろう。
1963年8月にリリースされたのにも関わらず、1999年にグラミー殿堂賞に選ばれ、ローリングストーンは史上22番目に優れた曲としてリストに入れた。

PhilのWall of Sound
Ronnieの夫であったPhil Spector がつくる Wall of Sound 制作の主要かつ最高の例の1つだ。これは、複数のセッションミュージシャンを大規模に録音して、オーケストラタイプのサウンドを作成することで構成されている手法。歌の楽器。このタイプの制作のもう1つの例は、バンドの最も有名な曲の1つである、クリスマスのヒット曲「SleighRide」にもある。
1963年7月にロサンゼルスのゴールドスタースタジオで録音。Spectorは、革新的なスタジオミキシングとオーバーダビングを使用して、ギター、サックス、複数のピアノ、ホーンなどのさまざまな楽器でレコーディングした。Phil は彼の制作方法を「ロックンロールへのワグネリアンのアプローチ」と表現し、それはサウンドの壁として知られるようになったのだ。
共作者/プロデューサーであるPhil Spector についてエンジニアの Larry Levine は「フィルがやっていたことはクレイジーで疲れ果ててしまいましたよ。でも、それは病的なことの兆候ではありますんよ。あれは天才です。」と語っていた。Philは、どんな音もヒット曲に変えてしまう名プロデューサーと言われていたが、作業や人間的な面では、仕事がハードで、作るためには独裁者的だった、とか支配者的だったと言われていたので、このエンジニアのLarryの感想を聴いて、やはり噂通りの人な人に思えて来た。Ronnieも大変だったのは、Philに、そう言うところがあったからかも？
この【Be My Baby】のドラムは、後に広く模倣されるようになったドラムビートを導入したハルブレインによって演奏されている。セッションのギターはトミー・テデスコとビル・ピットマンが演奏。その後シングルのB面にあるインストルメンタル「テデスコとピットマン」に名前が付けられた。
このドラムの使い方は、先程触れた Beach Boys のBrian Wilson に最も影響を与えた曲で、言葉の中でドラムを使ったコーラスを聞いた時にびっくりして凄く衝撃だったらしあた。（ビー・マイ、ビー・マイ・ベイビー）。 ！！ブームブーム–ブームパウ！のところ)
Phil Spectorのこの曲の制作は、Brianの音楽制作への情熱を復活させ、彼に似たサウンドを作成するように影響を与えたのだ。
因みに【Be My Baby】に感銘を受けたBrian Wilsonは、【Don’t Worry baby】を作り、The RonettesとPhil Spectorに曲を捧げている。
この曲はスペクターの 連ジャック・ニッチェがアレンジし、ラリー・レヴィンが作曲。ロニー・スペクターは、レコードに登場する唯一のロネットになる。
影響力の強さ
この曲は1963年以来、ラジオやテレビで390万回再生されたと推定されている。
歌詞の「whoa-oh-oh-oh」は、フォローアップシングル「Baby、ILoveYou」でリプリーズされ、これまたブームになる。
他にもマーティン・スコセッシの映画『ミーン・ストリート』(1973年）のオープニングのシーケンスに【Be My Baby】が登場している。スコセッシが、許可なしに使用した為、スペクターはスコセッシの収入から何年もの間、一定額を奪うことが出来たらしい。全く、お金を産む男なのね。
同様に、この曲は1987年の映画「Dirty Dancing」のオープニングに登場しているし、1987年3月31日に放送されたMoonlightingの「IAm Curious…Maddie」エピソードで使用されて、DaveとMaddieは彼らの関係を完成させることができた(笑)。
あと先程触れて来たEddie の1986年の曲「TakeMe Home Tonight」で印象的にサビで使われている。この曲では、Ronnie Spectorがコラボするだけでなく、「ロニーが歌ったように…」と「Be mylittlebaby」と歌詞を自身で歌っている。
The Ramonesは、1987年リリースした『Half Way to Sanity』で【Bye Bye Baby】と言うタイトル曲をレコーディングしている。

1999年にRonnie Spector はJoey Ramone に加わり、アルバムShe Talks toRainbowsのデュエットをレコーディングした。
Amy Winehouse をフィーチャーしたMutya Buena による2007年のシングル【Be Boy Baby】は、【Be My Baby】からメロディックで叙情的なパッセージを借りている。
The Ronettesの名は、The Chiffonsや The Crystals と共に、ミュージカル『リトル・ショップ・オブ・ホラーズ』に登場する浮浪児の名前に採用されていたり、映画、ミュージカルにまで影響を及ぼしているのが分かるだろう。

他にも ドラムのフレーズだけを使用しているのは沢山あって、Frank Sinatra song “Strangers in the Night” が有名。ドラムフレーズをゆっくりと柔らかなアレンジで再利用した。
その後の多くのポピュラー曲は、ポピュラー音楽で最もよく知られているドラムフレーズを複製または再現している場合が多い。

上の映像でのRonnieの歌声を聴けば、何故LyraがPopsやソウルで有名なRonnieを「ロックなヴォーカル」と言うのかが、わかると思う。
客の乗せ方やら、歌い回しが、もうRockだもの。可愛くてセクシーで、ちょっぴりいけない子な女性がモテないわけがない！
この歌い方を見ながら「あー、これはKeith (Richards) も好きになるわ！」とつい画面に向かって言ってしまった。
Ronnieみたいなパワフルで、ポジティブでSexyな女性は、モテるもんね〜。歌のうまさだけでなく、キャラ立ちしてるのが、虜になってしまうでしょう。
Keithと両思いなのを知り、Philは2人を離して自分がRonnieを自分のものにしてしまうのだから、何とも鬼も愛を知っとしまったのね、と思った。
しかし、上手く歌っているのに42回もレコーディングをやり直すんだから、Philスペクターの完璧主義は、一筋縄ではいかないな。それも好きな女に、、、どSは嫌いだわ。

Veronica Yvette Greenfield (Bennett; August 10, 1943 – January 12, 2022), known professionally as Ronnie Spector, was an American singer who formed the girl group the Ronettes in 1957 with her elder sister, Estelle Bennett, and their cousin, Nedra Talley. Ronnie fronted the group while record producer Phil Spector produced the majority of their recording output. The two were married in 1968 and separated in 1972.
“Be My Baby” was the Ronettes’ biggest hit, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It is considered one of the best songs of the 1960s by NME (2nd), Time, and Pitchfork(6th). In 1999, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The song ranked 22nd on Rolling Stone‘s both 2004 and 2020 editions of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and described as a “Rosetta stone for studio pioneers such as the Beatles and Brian Wilson,” a notion supported by AllMusic who writes, “No less an authority than Brian Wilson has declared ‘Be My Baby’ the greatest pop record ever made—no arguments here.” In 2006, the Library of Congress honored the Ronettes’ version by adding it to the United States National Recording Registry. In 2017, Billboard named the song number 1 on their list of the “100 Greatest Girl Group Songs of All Time”.

The song was composed by the trio of Phil Spector, Jeff Barry, and Ellie Greenwich. It features I – ii – V7 and I – vi – IV – V chord progressions.

“Be My Baby” was recorded in July 1963 at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles. Spector recorded a range of instruments including guitars, saxophones, multiple pianos, and horns with innovative studio mixing and over-dubbing. Spector described his production method as “a Wagnerian approach to rock & roll”, which became known as the wall of sound. “Be My Baby” was one of the first times Phil Spector used a full orchestra in his recording. The drums were played by Hal Blaine, who introduced a drum beat that later became widely imitated. Guitars on the session were played by Tommy Tedesco and Bill Pitman, after whom the instrumental “Tedesco and Pitman” on the B-side of the single was named.
The song was arranged by Spector regular Jack Nitzsche and engineered by Larry Levine. Ronnie Spector is the only Ronette to appear on the record.
Released in August 1963, “Be My Baby” is the most famous song of The Ronettes and perhaps one of the most popular songs of the sixties.
The song was inducted to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999 and Rolling Stone listed it as the 22nd best song of all time.

“Be My Baby” is one of the main and finest examples of Ronette’s member Ronnie’s husband Phil Spector’s ‘Wall of Sound’ production, which consists on a large-scale recording of multiple session musicians to create an orchestra-type of sound that garnishes the instrumental of the song. Barbara Cane, vice president and general manager of writer-publisher relations for the songwriters’ agency BMI, estimated that the song has been played in 3.9 million feature presentations on radio and television since 1963. “That means it’s been played for the equivalent of 17 years back to back.”
The lyric “whoa-oh-oh-oh” was reprised in their follow-up single “Baby, I Love You”.
The song appears in the opening credit sequence of Martin Scorsese’s film Mean Streets(1973). It was used without clearance by Scorsese, allowing Spector to take a bite out of Scorsese’s earnings for years. Similarly, the song appears in the opening sequence of the 1987 film Dirty Dancing.
The song plays in the “I Am Curious… Maddie” episode of Moonlighting aired March 31, 1987, where Dave and Maddie consummated their relationship. This event not only drew the largest audience the show had, but also may have led to the show’s decline.
The song is invoked and interpolated in Eddie Money‘s 1986 song “Take Me Home Tonight“, in which Ronnie Spector replies to “Just like Ronnie sang …” with “Be my little baby”.
Ramones recorded a song titled “Bye Bye Baby” in their Halfway to Sanity album, released in 1987. In 1999, Ronnie Spector joined Joey Ramone and recorded a duet for the album She Talks to Rainbows.
The 2007 single “B Boy Baby” by Mutya Buena featuring Amy Winehouse borrows melodic and lyrical passages from “Be My Baby”.
Drum phrase

Andy Kim released a version of the song as a single in 1970. In the United States, his version spent 11 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 17, and No. 24 on Billboard‘s Easy Listening chart. It also reached No. 12 on the Cash Box Top 100. In Canada, the song reached No. 6 on the RPM 100, while reaching No. 16 on the New Zealand Listener chart, No. 24 in West Germany, and No. 36 on Australia’s Go-Set National Top 60. It was also a hit in Brazil.

In 1972, Jody Miller released a version as a single and on the album There’s a Party Goin’ On. Her version reached No. 15 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Singles chart and No. 35 on Billboard‘s Easy Listening chart. It also reached No. 15 on the Cash Box Country Top 75 and Record World‘s Country Singles Chart. In Canada, the song reached No. 11 on the RPM Country Playlist.

- 1976 – Shaun Cassidy released a cover of the song on his eponymous debut album. The following year it was released as a single and reached No. 39 in West Germany.
- 1984- France Gall Sang the song as a duet on a french TV special called “Formule 1” with Lio, although this was never released as a album or song.
- 1992 – Teen Queens released a cover of the song that reached number 6 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart in May 1992. It was certified Gold in Australia and was the country’s 44th-most-successful song of 1992.
- 2013 – Leslie Grace covered the song in bachata for her eponymous album in a bilingual version in English and Spanish. Her version peaked at number 8 on the BillboardHot Latin Songs and number 6 on the Tropical Songs chart.
