Japan should beware of a "Senkaku" trap set up by Americans
Americans are encouraging Japan to face off against China in all possible arenas, political, economic, military, and territory. US's stance on "Senkaku" has been especially applauded by the China hawks.
However, underneath the apparent merits of these things, there might be a trap for Japan. If Japan imprudently followed the encouragements by Americans, Japan can get into a trap that is not good for Japan's interests and hard to escape once in it.
We need to think about these things:
1. Why won't US declare that the four northern islands are applicable to Article 5 of the Japan-US security treaty? Those are much more valuable and important than the little rock at Senkaku, and were Japan's territory historically, but now under Russia's control.
My guess is, Russia has too many nukes that US dare not to offend, while China has much less. However, China is economically a lot bigger than Russia, theoretically China afford to make more nukes than Russia, but it chooses not to. This means China is less as combative as Russia. So the US's policy is to encourage the more combative country, and punish the less combative country? That sounds ridiculous and self-defeating. What would US and Japan do if China says, "Ok, let me take a page from Russia"?
This reminds me another issue. The conventional wisdom is that a country with more economic power is more dangerous militarily, and the "China threat" hype is heavily based on this assumption. Clearly, this assumption itself is wrong. While Russia's economy is a lot smaller than Japan, which in turn is smaller than China, its military power and influence is bigger than China, and the Russia military is something that even US has to reckon with.
2. Presumably US does not really want a war with China, or anyone. All It really wants is to get the most national interests for US from the rest of the world by adopting an edge-of-war approach to all its foreign policy.
A confrontation between China and Japan certainly benefits US more than a cooperation or integration between Japan and China. This will do harm to both countries, both of them are powerful countries and therefore a contenders or restraints to US hegemony in the world. Besides, this will cause Japan to be more dependent on US, more obedient to US request, so US can exploit Japan economically, politically, and militarily.
The Trump administration have requested a quadrupling of the fee for US troops stationing in Japan to a staggering $8,000,000,000 level. Doesn't this reveal Americans' true intention with regard to Japan?
3. Russians' role in this "China threat" hype.
Russians have conflicting views on China. On one hand, they need China to be an ally when Russia confronts US and the west. On the other hand, they might want to use America's power to contain China, or maybe China needs to be pressed harder by the west to become a solid ally of Russia. Depending on different circumstances, one of the conflicting views is surfaced by different people through different channels. It is quite possible that Russians played some role in promoting the "China-threat" buzz words through its influence in US politics.
Everyone who know about US politics know that Russians have great influence in US politics. Russians played significant role in helping Trump to win the 2016 election. Although Trump lost the 2020 election, but Russian influence will continue to affect US politics and its foreign policies. Actually Russia was exposed to have meddled in UK politics too.

From Japan's past experience with both countries, Russia has always been a much more dangerous power than China. Russia has waged far more wars than China, its ratio of defense budget to GDP is also significantly higher, and is stronger militarily than China, Russia is less dependent on foreign trade which makes it more likely to ignore international opinion and pull the trigger of war. Besides, Russia has seen time after time that US and western countries are essentially helpless against Russia's wars.
For any country, it is always beneficial to have a balanced geopolitical configuration, i.e. to want the stronger country gets weakened. So why would Japan prioritize the "China threat" when it was advocated by Japan's 1st and 2nd powerful neighboring country?
So, if the people that promote the "China threat" hype behind the scene are Russians or related to Russia, Japan should have more reason to reconsider its own position.
4. Misreading of China leads to "China threat" therory.
The misreading has two factors. One is the intentional smearing or demonizing of China by western media which is heavily influenced by American media, which in turn is led directly or indirectly by US government. This smearing is ubiquitous so that a deep and widespread bias on China has been formed. About the smearing of China, see →my other blog article←.
Another factor is attributed to CCP itself. Sometime CCP uses strong words, but these are for propaganda in its domestic politics. China's international behaviors are mostly reactive rather than proactive, it may become assertive after being provoked, but is usually combative only in lip-service. This is especially obvious if you compare China's actions in foreign affairs with those of America or Russia. As intelligent adults, we know how to deal with propaganda, don't we? It is wrong to base our judgment too much on a country's internal political propaganda rather than the real behaviors.
The CCP diplomats like to label themselves as wolf-warriors, but I think they are more like buffalos with horns. The horns are pretentious and scary-looking, but much less effective and less lethal than the teeth and claws of predatory carnivores, while the latter are less as showy. The diplomacy of CCP is also less skillful, less well-thought, and less effective! Now America, UK, France, Australia all sent the air-carriers or warships to the periphery of China, see, that's what real wolves usually do.
5. What about Japan's interests on Senkaku island?
A locked-in contention with China on this issue is not beneficial to both Japan and China, a war is even less so and actually could bring more harm than the combined possible benefits of the island.
Although Americans have killed almost all the native Indians and shipped many Africans to America as slaves, there are still plenty of small and weak countries in the world, as many as herbivores on the African prairie. As a crippled leopard, if Japan wants to contend territorial dispute with China, even join-forced with a lion (US), it is still quite dangerous and costly. Even a group of lions, in the fight with buffalo, often suffer serious injuries and lose lives occasionally. While the Japan's right-wings take risk to contend for territory with China, why not look around the world and find some small and weak herbivores? That's stupid. Maybe right-wings all over the world have stupidity in common. For example, in the US, they are called trumptards, Trump cult, or Magats, while Trump himself is called a moron.
6. A balanced geopolitical configuration is beneficial to Japan, actually to all countries. Currently the country that overwhelms any other countries militarily, economically and technologically by far is USA, the second is Russia. This will not change much for the foreseeable future. It is the US that should be contained, China has a long way to go before it is to be contained provided that it can succeed to become the top superpower at all.
Some influential Americans advocate that China is the topmost global threat since China's economy is growing faster than global average recently, so its military power will also grow proportionally. But we have already seen that Russia demonstrated that the proportionality does not hold. Believing in this garbage is stupid. This is almost like to convict someone of a crime even before the crime has been committed, based on the judge's imagination that someone is going to do something.
The world only needs to contain a country only if the country is the current topmost world power, neither before nor after. The reason is simple: to prevent a super carnivore evolving out of a herd of herbivores. Currently America is the topmost superpower. On its way to evolve into a world-ruling Rome empire from a mere superpower, or to evolve into a super carnivore out of a herd of herbivores, Americans probably see China as an obstacle. Trump certainly has given us a pre-trial of the taste of a ruling Rome empire. Trust me, Trump will not be the last Trump of America, the next Trump can be more crazy. Thanks to Trump, we now know that America must be curbed, and no one should be an accomplice to help America to evolve into a super carnivore.
In cosmology, when a celestial body's mass is greater than a critical mass, it is destined to collapse into a black hole. In biological evolution, if a creature has too many advantages, it will evolve into a predator creature (carnivore), which is disastrous for other types of creatures. In the evolution of countries on the world stage, if a strong country has too many advantages, so that it can use its overall advantage to suppress the progress of any other country in any specific area it wants, then it is destined to become a super predator country. This is unfortunate for all other countries. So all countries in the world should avoid that kind of situation to happen.
Over and over again, Americans have used its overall advantage to suppress progress of other countries in area which they see vital. This happened with Japan in semiconductor area, with France on the Alstom case, with China on Huawei and 5G communication, with Germany on "Nord Stream 2" project. In the 20th century, if a country gained top position in the production capacity of cement and steel, it became a superpower. However, in the 21st century, the importance of leading in science and technology far outweighs the importance of leading in manufacturing capacity. The political system of China, combined with the fact that it is a big country with top population in the world, has made China a superpower in manufacturing. However, the political system of China can not compete with that of mature developed democratic countries in ensuring the efficient and sound allocation and utilization of talents. In this regard, America is the only superpower in science and technology that is far ahead of other countries, and U.S. also uses unfair means and its hegemony power to block other countries' catching up. Countries in the world should focus not to the tonnage of steel produced by China, but to the gap between U.S. and other countries in science and technology, military power and financial power, as well as the widening gap of these. All countries must unite to deal with America to prevent America from becoming the lion king, while other countries fall to hyenas, buffalos and antelope.
Even if China's economy surpassed America's, its military power will still lag behind U.S. by a lot and has no chance to catch up. We have seen this has happened with Russia. But more importantly it is the rest of the world that provides the majority of the resources that supports the huge American military spending. U.S. has been stealing resources and wealth from the world through trade deficits for some 30 years, with the accumulated amount well above $10,000 billion. The deal is simple, U.S. prints more dollars each year (about $500 billion per year), and exchange the paper money with real wealth through import. This exchange has been lasting for some 30 years. In essence, U.S. sent the world a big sum of dollars, which is a logging of an IOY ( I owe you ) in a ledger, but the fact of the matter is that U.S. has never intended to pay back and will never be able to pay back the IOY. This is equal to "I owe you a lot, but you can never cash in the IOY.", isn't that stealing? Let me put all the numbers together for better contrast:
U.S. military spending: ~$750 billion,
U.S. trade deficit per year: ~$500 billion, ~67% of total military spending.
The protection fee per year requested by Trump on Japan: $8 billion, 1.1% of US spending, 15% of Japan spending. US also collects protection fees from many other countries.
The combined military spending by the next ten countries is significantly less than $750 B.
So the "parasite" on world economy is nourishing and sharpening its teeth and claws by blood-sucking the world economy. Considering the huge amount involved, Putin really understated when he used the word "parasite". My contribution is to remind you, (1) It is such a big issue, but the world seems not concerned at all, (2) even if they were concerned, I don't see how we can get out of this trap yet, (3) the key point is to envision the accumulated effect of US's blood-sucking over 10 years, 50 years, 100 years period, you can see this is exactly the way how a creature evolves from a herbivore to a super predatory carnivore. Obviously and unarguably, this blood-sucking by America on the world is the single most serous and terrible world threat.
From these considerations, for Japan's best interests now and in the future, it should keep an independent foreign policy and resist from participating in America's bully actions while maintaining a friendly relationship with it.
Conclusions
The American politicians are very shrewd and cold-blooded business men. Japanese people should think harder and deeper for themselves, rather than blindly follow suit of Americans. Some of the right-wing China hawks in Japan are stupid and have been easily manipulated and brainwashed by shrewd Americans armed with powerful propagating media.
Think about the speech of the US secretary of state Mike Pompeo to American university students: "Have you all been taught not to lie, cheat and steal? But, I tell you that we lied, we cheated and we stole. The world out there is really tough! " I must emphasize that this thug-like behavior is not limited to Pompeo, not limited to this Trump administration of US, and not limited to the cases when the US is dealing with adversaries, it is pervasive in Americans politicians throughout the years.
If we believe in democracy, then democracy should not be limited to domestic politics of a country, but should also apply to international relations. Currently America is too strong for the global community to have a healthy democracy, and it is getting stronger. Every country, including Japan, should (1) at least not help America bully other countries and get even stronger, (2) better unite together against U.S. since no one can confront U.S, alone.
