白い杖をつき、道路を渡っている女性を見ました。わたしは車を運転し、その方は道路を渡っているところでした。道路を渡り切ったその人は、歩道を歩いて行きました。
歩道では何台かの自転車がすれ違います。そこでわたしの信号が青になり、わたしは運転を続けたのでそこまでしか見ていないのですが、今回改めて考えさせられました。
目の見えるわたしにとって、自転車がきたら端に避けることはなんら難しくはありません。わたしが見たところ、彼女は音が聞こえているのでおずおずと端の方に寄っていました。工事の塀が出ているところは狭く、かなりゆっくりと歩いていました。最初の自転車はスピードを落とさず、見ているわたしはハラハラしました。次に続く自転車からは速度がゆっくりとなったので、ほっとしました。
パラリンピックもあり、今はドラマでも白杖をつく女の子が主人公のドラマをやっているようで、皆の関心が大きくなっているようです。いいことだと思います。まずは知ることですよね。例えばいきなり腕を掴んだりすると当然視覚障害のある方は驚いてしまうので、声をかけて、案内する場合はわたしたちの腕や肩を持ってもらう、というのがいいのだそう。
障害は彼らではなくシステムだ、という当事者のコメントも最近新聞記事で読みました。確かにそうですね！
I saw a woman with a white cane crossing the street. I was waiting to the traffic light to change in the car. After reaching the other side, she walked on the pedestrian street.
There are a few bicycles passing by. For me or us without a sight problem, we just step to the side to avert. She is timidly moving to the side as she appeared to hear the sound when bicycles pass by. It must be difficult for her to do it as she is walking quite slow. For me, I can just move quick because I see them. Especially where the pedestrian street is narrower with the construction fences, it looks difficult. The first bike didn't slow down so I was gasping. Nothing happened gladly. The other bikes slowed down so that was relieving. Then my light changed blue so I started driving.
After the Paralympics in Tokyo, people seem to be more interested in disabled people's situation. We have a drama playing now who has a white cane, which is good. When we start is to know. I read we shouldn't just grab an arm to help someone who doesn't see, obviously. We should ask first, and ask them to hold on our arm or shoulder.
They are not the ones with an obstacle, the system is. That's the remark I recently read in the newspaper. That is true.
