When we visited here, you needed to make a reservation in order to see the inside, and there was an hour-long guided tour. The tour guide starts the tour by saying this, but please note that this is not a lighthouse.
The Portland Observatory is an octagonal naval observation tower built by Lemuel Moody in 1807, and it is the oldest observation tower of its type still standing. Moody served in the American Navy, and in the 1790’s captained the schooner BetsyIt was during this time that he was captured by French privateers, and after returning home he retired from sailing. At that time Portland’s commercial harbor was bustling with activity, and the port could get crowded with the coming and going of ships. Moody identified the problem as no one knowing when and what ships were about to arrive beforehand, and decided that the city needed a signal tower at its highest elevation point. Up until the day before he died, Moody climbed the seven-story, 28-meter-tall tower three times per day, to check which ships were coming into port. From the observatory at the top, he could see ships from as far as around 50km away.
The observatory was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and in 2006 it was made a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. On the tour, you walk with the guide from the first floor all the way up to the top of the seventh-floor. The highlight of course is getting to look out around you from the observatory at the top. There is a 360-degree view of Portland and the ocean. On a clear day you can also see the White Mountains in New Hampshire, and it certainly feels like you are up quite high. The reddish-brown brick exterior makes the observatory. If you are interested in history and want a chance to take some great photos, this is a place you must visit while in Portland.
