I can’t remember exactly when
but I think my last semester of junior high
my teacher, Matsushita-sensei and I had a meeting.
In Japan, mandatory education is
only through middle school
so he asked me which high school I was planning on going to.
In my house, my dad was incredibly violent
and I couldn’t tell anyone.
We were incredibly poor
and didn’t have extra money that my sensei didn’t know about.
And I wanted to leave home
as soon as I could so I decided to go straight to work…
I told Matsushita-sensei
that I was not planning on going to high school
but instead, going right to work.
He yelled at me. “ YOU ARE FOOLISH!”
My older sister went to Kokubu High School
and nowadays almost nobody stops their education after middle school.
What can you do in the world
if you don’t study and have an education?
Matsushita-sensei went on and on
about all the reasons I should stay in school.
I wanted to tell him that
my oldest brother wasn’t able to go to high school
because we didn’t have enough money at the time
and he was doing fine
but Matsushita-sensei didn’t give me a chance to talk.
